The Optometric Institute and Clinic of Metropolitan Detroit was founded in 1968 to fill one of the central city's many unmet health needs, that of full service eye and vision care.

The Optometric Institute is the only optometric agency in Detroit providing complete primary eye and vision care to people with restricted financial resources. The Institute is committed to serving people regardless of their ability to pay.

The Institute serves clients of all ages, and has a special priority to help children and older Americans, who have the most vision problems of any group.

The Institute was founded by community leaders and area optometrists who were concerned about quality eye care access.
